I am often interested in the lack of follower training we offer in the world of business. What may seem as something requiring little attention I would comment that if leaders are developed that development begins in the period where the individual is primarily in a follower role. Look at how the military teaches followership as foundational to being able to lead. A very nice beginning to developing the servant leader.

Excellent commentary. I would also add the need to address engagement as a generational issue. The challenge with traditional engagement approaches as they fail to address generational needs. True engagement sees the needs of each individual (as noted by generational identity)and crafting approaches to meet that need. Can you imagine how powerful it could be if we could understand what a Baby Boomer needs versus a Gen Y employee and then crafting an approach to address that need? Your 5 key strategies are great and would advocate to push team leaders to use this as a foundation in addressing how each area can be applied to a generation. The challenge great...the reward immeasureable.

You said: "Finally, inquiry involves setting aside judgment of what is being said. It involves the ability to understand what others are thinking and feeling from their perspective. This is a bigger challenge than most of us realize at first glance. Often, people filter the other person’s communication through their own experiences. The filter can easily distort the true meaning being conveyed."

So true. In my opinion, this is the most important aspect of all. A lesson I have definitely been "schooled" on in the past few months. What a valuable lesson to remember in all of our interactions. Thanks for the reminder, Diane.
